The subject of Virginia Sharkey’s vivid abstract acrylic paintings is time; the presentation specifically of a series of tone poems to noon and midnight conveying the energy and feeling of these opposite 12’s. The subjects are mystery, radiance, surprise and the search for perfection. On the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death, a re-reading of the Divine Comedy with his three stages of the soul’s progress towards heaven in ascending light inspired Commedia.

Time Trapped one person show, September 5-30, 2019, Partners Gallery, Ft Bragg, CA
In September Virginia Sharkey is showing seven large acrylic paintings reflecting her continuing exploration on the subject of time. The artist begins with a feeling tone manifested by color, augmented by the ingredients of space, gravity and energy which when combined produce their own kind of resonance––harmonious or not–– but with a result that is evocative and mysterious.

Time Traps: Poetry into Painting consists of the days of the week series Sharkey painted as part of her on-going investigation into the pictorial depiction of time. Inspired by medieval books of the hours, the paintings were first conceived through writing poems, included in this exhibit, which were then translated into the highly saturated color fields of these seven sensual large-scale abstract paintings.
